Home Science is a multi disciplinary course offered at the degree level in science stream. It is a unique course,
bringing about a milieu of the science, arts and humanities. For a student craving for something off- beat, after
the hectic two year intermediate course loaded with basic biological and physical sciences, Home Science is a
good find. Home Science is a semi-professional applied science course. For students who wants to pursue
science, Home science still keeps them in science track and does not totally wean them away from sciences It
orients a student to acquire comprehensive knowledge and skill in all areas related to human mind, body and
environment. It is a study of science of life and the art of living to achieve a decent, healthy and beautiful
personal, family and social bonding.

It deals with the core needs of a human being, the Food, Shelter and
Clothing. The course is designed in such a way that a person’s needs with regard to these three basic needs
from womb to tomb are dealt with. We also proudly announce that we are not left behind in the technology race
and all the staff and students are computer literates and has about 50 % ICT enabled teaching and learning.

In St.Joseph’s college Home Science is a 60 year old Department in Andhra University, which started as
Domestic Science at PUC level in 1958, later elevated to Degree course in 1959 and to a Post graduate in
2014. It was the First college to start Home science at UG level in Andhra University. The Department proudly
claims that the First faculty to get Ph.D. in St.Joseph’s college was from Home science and also the First
Ph.D. in Home Science in Andhra Pradesh (1975), was also from the department. That is Late
Dr.A.Vijayalakshmi, Head of the department (1975-1990).

The Department presently has 9 Staff members
and 140 UG and 50 PG students. It extends its services to the non-Jome science students as well in the form
of certificate, add-on and Diploma courses, creative activities, exhibitions, seminars as well as creating
awareness on issues related to women students such as nutrition, prevention of anemia, prevention of physical
abuse etc. |
