The Department of Economics was started in the year 1958 B.A Program, History-Economics-Political science combination.(HEP) And later in 1987 under Autonomous Stream, new combination with Economics in B.A. Program was introduced i.e., History-Economics-Office Management(HEO) The department successfully completed 60 years and celebrated Diamond Jubilee. Senior and Retired faculty were invited to the function and received their blessings and wishes to further development of the department. The present first member of the Department Dr. Mrs. P. Jayalakshmi, received Andhra Pradesh State Best Teacher Award in Economics in the year 2017 September 5th. She successfully completed UGC minor Research project during 2014-16 and she presented a Research Paper at “IJAS Conference at Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, BOSTON, USA in May 2016. Nearly 25-30 Research Papers published in different national and international Journals. The Department faculty regularly attending National, International conferences and presented research papers.

The Department extended its services to offer new B.Sc Program with Economics combination Mathematics, Economics, and computer science,(MECs) “V” Batch in 2007, and 2 B.A programs English Literature, Economics and Political Science (EEP) and another program in B.A commerce, Economics and Management (CEM) were started in 2011. The New course are running successfully and students are encouraged these programs through select as their career path. One of the 1st Batch B.Sc students “V” batch had successfully completed her P.G (Economics) M.Phill, and Ph.D (Eco).

The Department usually celebrates important days with National and International Economic Significance like World Population Day, World Literacy Day etc. And also engage in Community outreach activities and Social Awareness programs. And also arrange awareness and inspiration lectures for personality development and subject up gradations purposes. Example on the occasion of World Forest Day invited IFS official Ms Shivani Dogra, IFS, Visakhapatnam Range, visited college and inspired the students about subject knowledge and UPSC exams aspirants. Some eminent personalities and officials, Member, State Finance Commission, Prof. R. Sundarsana Rao, ACTA, and A.P presented, Pro. S. Pulla Rao . Visited the Department and participated in activities which were conducted by the department.

Every year 3 to 4 UG Economics students joined in Higher Education Programs especially M.A .,Economics at Andhra University and some of them offered MHRM, M.B.A and B. Ed programs. In “W” Batch Ms. P,V.S. Hashini got A.P. State “ PRATIBHA AWARD” with cash Rs.20,000/ and Laptop and Merit Certificate in PG Mathematical Economics. She did her PG at SV University, 2011-13
