 ABOUT DEPARTMENT

Department of Chemistry is a pioneering department in the college. The department is as old as the college itself currently marking 60 years of Jubilee celebrations. The chemistry department plays a pivotal role in the conduct of all the three levels of science programmes offered in the college namely,2 Intermediate (10+2), 3 UG and 1 PG level. Faculty members of the dept. are actively involved not only in the transaction of the chemistry core courses of the said programmes but also in managing interdisciplinary foundation as well as skill development courses.

CBCS curriculum with core elective and cluster elective options in the VI Semester is introduced wef 2015-16 in compliance with university, state and central level regulatory body guidelines. Undergraduate programme with Chemistry as one of the core disciplines is a dynamic one in the college; since it was offered as a main paper of the B.Sc.Chemistry programme right from the time of inception (1957) till the common core system was made obligatory by Andhra University (1987). Triple major system with Chemistry as one of the 3 majors (MPC, CBZ, BBC) was in place from 1987 to 2015. CBCS pattern with cluster and core elective options introduced wef 2015-16, in response to stake holder demand, has the added advantage of research and entrepreneurship promotion as well.

The Chemistry curriculum is both knowledge intensive and skill oriented. Experiential learning, encouraged in the form of laboratory experimentation, field project study and hands on industry training, improves students’ chances of securing admission to higher education courses and also placement. The faculty members of the dept. are suitably qualified and experienced to facilitate professional course transaction and support student research on current topics.

Department members are involved in conducting dept. level induction programmes, bridge courses (theory and practical) and remedial classes. One national seminar,2 regional colloquiums, workshops and several college level events. Department holds student seminars, field visits to industry, Extension work in adopted village, and a partnership UNICEF Programme. Students of chemistry actively organizing academic competition as elocutions, debates, quizzes, essay writing , puzzles and cultural events through ANALYTICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION AND ECO CLUB.
