The Student Council

The Genesis: The Student Council of St. Joseph's College for Women (Autonomous) Visakhapatnam formed ever since the inception of the College in 1958 has evolved into a body which is a platform for leadership and personality development of the young women.

The motto of the Student Council is "to promote the interests and welfare of the College and to provide social, cultural and educational opportunities for the students of St. Joseph's College for Women through creating and maintaining a forum for the discussion and concerns vital to the students of the College and to represent those concerns to the campus and community".

The Student Council comprises Representatives from the Seniors (Final Degree) Juniors (Second Degree) Intermediates and PG students. The Council has FIVE Faculty Advisors who guide and mentor the students in the various activities for tapping the latent talent in them and overall development in the journey of empowering them as responsible young women and global citizens.

The what of the  Student Council 

  • Coordinates with the Principal and Faculty Advisors for the conduct of all events and activities.
  • Organizes many events every year starting with the Inaugural Function and closing with the Valedictory Function.
  • Conducts a host of Interdepartmental Competitions and Events; Fund Raising programs (as per the need).
  • Celebrates National and commemorative days like Independence Day, Republic Day, Women's Day, World Environment Day, World Aids Day, World Population Day. Ethnic Day, Teachers' Day, Youth Day among many other days.
  • Plays a catalytic role in the leadership development of the students through Executive positions and Class Leadership.
  • Coordinates external competitions and student participation in the same.
  • Maintains order and discipline among the students during all activities in the college campus.
  • Handles minor matters like cleanliness in the campus while having lunch in the classrooms, keeping the classrooms clean, maintain the hygiene and cleanliness in the wash rooms and playfield.
  • Liaisons with the other Associations and Clubs for a harmonious functioning and conduct of the activities in the College.

    Regular Features of Student Council Activities

    Inaugural Function

    Marks the beginning of the student activities calendar and is also an occasion for the two seniors to welcome their Juniors into the college formally. It includes an elaborate Variety program with dances, songs, skits and others performed by almost all the classes. The Executive Council is introduced to the College. The Chief Guest, the Principal and staff advisors motivate the students by talking about the importance of co and extra curricular activities.     Valedictory Function

    Marks the culmination of the student activities during the year and is also an occasion for the juniors to bid farewell to their seniors. Annual proficiency prizes are distributed by the chief guest. The Principal and the Chief Guest use this opportunity to exhort the students about their future role in the community and nation building. A short entertainment program is also arranged on this occasion. The chief guests who graced the inauguration during 2009-2015 are as follows

    Independence Day Celebrations

    The Chief Guest is usually the incumbent NCC commandant except in 2010 when Sri. D. V. Subbarao, the former Mayor of Visakhapatnam was so honoured. The celebrations include a grand parade (of the NCC, NSS, Sports and Student Council contingents), rendering of patritotic songs, skits on thought provoking issues like women’s welfare and folk dances. Attendance is compulsory and recorded.

    Teachers Day

    Students normally make a presentation about Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, and in the evening Variety Entertainment Program is presented by the students for the teacher. Sports and games are also arranged and prizes given.

    Mrs.Nakra Rolling Shield Debate on current topics is a annual events organized by the English department.

    Lagaan

    Cricket Match between faculty and students is a much awaited event in the calendar of Josephines. This is coordinated by Dr. Devendra Vijay Reader in Chemistry Department.

    Student Council Activities

    Year Activites
    2013-2014
    1. In the month of June the Student Council collaborated with 'Kalamayi', SJC Art Club and organized a display of sketches of Facial Contours of women and girl child by Shruti Patwari, II BA EPJ.
    2. In July the student council in collaboration with 'Shrishti' organized Essay Writing competition and workshop on Short story writing.
    3. On the 15th of August, the student council presented a mammoth dance in which 42 students performed at the Independence Day celebrations at AU Engineering Grounds, Andhra University. The group was adjudged the 'Best Performance in the Cultural Event'.
    4. On 20th of August, the Student council along with the Mobster's crew conducted auditions for students for a 1 week Contemporary Dance Workshop in which 15 students recieved training.
    5. In the month of September the student council & Kalamayi jointly organized a display of 'Sketches of Landscapes and Facial Expressions' by Priyamwada Nayak, student of BSc CBZ.
    6. Inaugral Function for the Academic year 2013-2014 was held on the 7th september in the college campus.
    7. In the month of November the Student council organized an Essay writing Competition on behalf of Forum for Free enterprise, Mumbai on Socio - Economic issues.
    8. The student wing of Rotary Club, vizag was formally installed. Around 85 students registered as members of the Rotaract Club.
    2014-2015
    1. On September 8th Young India chapter of St.Joseph’s College for 2014-15 was started in our college. A research laboratory in chemistry was inaugurated by Sr. Alice Marie, correspondent of our college on September 30th.
    2. In December the student council conducted a Street Play Competition on the theme of SwatchBharat, which has been launched by our Honorable Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi.
    3. January is a month of celebrations in south India marking the harvest season. To celebrate the theme of Sankranthi, the Council conducted a Muggulu Competition for students. A rangoli competition was organized for teaching and non teaching staff of the college. The response for both the competitions was very encouraging.
    4. Our students also actively took part in the essay writing and elocution competition conducted by A.U school of economics and one of our students bagged 1st prize in elocution. One of our students got the best presentation award in the United Nations International Youth day celebrations in Dr. L. Bullayya College.
    5. The month of November was filled with district level and state level events. Aditya Degree College celebrated National library week and conducted many competitions. Our students won prizes in Elocution, Essay writing and Painting competitions. During this month, our students actively took part in a state level commerce and management- “SAMANVAY-2014” meet hosted by Aditya Degree College, Vskp.
    6. Two of our students won prizes in an essay writing competition which was conducted by Anti-Corruption Bureau, Govt. of India on the occasion of Anti Corruption week. Prism College conducted a youth fest “Varnahela” where 13 of our student’s bagged prizes under the categories, “Vendor’s Paradise”, “Face Graffiti”, “M.S Harbinger”, “code Crafty” and “Brand Czar”.
    7. A two day National chemistry fest was conducted in Loyola College, Vijayawada, where 10 of our B.Sc. students got prizes in various competitions. Our students also took part in Gitam Excellence Meet and District Youth Festival conducted by YMCA, securing many prizes.
    8. We all know that on October 6th a severe cyclonic storm Hud Hud hit the coastline of Visakhapatnam. Though the cyclone had a bad effect on every one of us, we Josephine’s did everything we could to bring the working of the college back to normal. Staff and students did shramdaan in clearing the debris, cutting down branches and trees and re-planting some of the trees.
    9. Different associations in the college hosted a variety of events, such as games, sale of hand made products, and sale of eats and so on to raise funds for the college. Donation boxes were placed in the campus and students contributed liberally.
    10. The month of January was eventful for all of us at St.Joseph’s as, 5 different clubs were launched to nurture the talent of students and to provide a platform for them to exhibit their multi talents.
    11. The clubs are the cultural club, literary club, talent club, theatre club and the quizzing club. It is visualized that these clubs will be the talent pools for students where they can perform, share and excel. Our college has also begun western instrumental music classes, where many students are learning to play guitar and key board under the guidance of Mr. Andrews.
    2015-2016
    1. The student council activities started with an Elocution competition which was organized in view of the ongoing event namely ‘Godavari Pushkaralu’.  Following that was an essay writing competition in the memory of Late Mr. Y S R Reddy, celebrating his 66th birth anniversary.
    2. Awakening the patriotic spirit among students just before the Independence Day, a group song competition was held on 6th of August. Solo singing competition was also conducted in three categories-classical, semi-classical and light. A group dance competition was conducted to bring out the best dancing talents of students.
    3. The student council on behalf of all the students presented small tokens of love and respect to the teachers on teacher’s day.
    4. In the memory of the greatness of one such teacher, the Mrs. Nakra Memorial debate competition was conducted on 15th of September. The topic of the debate was ‘Social Networking- an effective tool for nation building.
    5. The annual feature of A D Shroff memorial elocution competition was conducted in the memory of Late A D Shroff with the object of encouraging the students to think and speak on topics of national interest like disaster management, emerging trends of globalization and the like.
    6. ECO Buzz, the Economics department of the college conducted an Economics Quiz Contest named ‘THE YOUNG ECONOMIST’ where various colleges were invited for participation. We were over whelmed by the response and participation of the students.
    7. BUZI COM, the commerce association had organised a full day ‘Buzi Com Mela’ putting up various food items, games and crafts for sale and organised a rangoli competition on the eve of Sankranthi and an Exhibition on coins and currency along with crafts sale.
    8. On 26th January 2016 the St. Joseph’s College for Women started a new custom to celebrate the Republic day in the college premises.
    9. The greatest achievement of the year 2015-16 was the initiative of TARANG, the first ever youth fest of St Joseph’s College for Women (A). This initiative of the student council proved to be a platform for all the Josephines to bring out the best in them. There were various literary and cultural competitions and events which include dance, singing, just a minute, story -telling quiz etc. Students and teachers had put up several stalls exhibiting and selling various products. The Horror House and the Retro themed ramp walk were some of the highlights of the event.
