Vision of the Department: To enhance the standards of verbal and written Telugu among the Telugu and non Telugu speaking students.

Introduction to the Department

Telugu has been offered as a Second Language ever since the inception of the College in 1958. Telugu is offered as  one of the Second Languages along with French and Hindi at the Intermediate and Undergraduate level. With increasing technology and the media impact, there has been a fall in the standards of every language be it English, HIndi or any of the regional languages as young people fall prey to short forms (SMS) language, certain 'not so desirable' vocabulary used in films and TV soaps. The Department has taken many proactive measures to encourage the use of good Telugu among school teachers through workshops and lectures.

At the Undergraduate level, Telugu along with French and Hindi  is offered as a Second Language as part of the Foundation Course in four Semesters for the students.

The textbook and other learning materials are specially designed by the Faculty members to cater to the special features of the unique Telugu curriculum developed especially for the college.

Unique features of the curriculum under Autonomy in SJC.

Linguistics, Journalism, Creative writing and Narration techniques are introduced as  unique featureS in the syllabus along with the conventional aspects like grammar, poetry and prose.

Teaching Learning techniques for effective language learning:
 
The Faculty of the Department take active interest in inculcating love for Telugu as a Second Language against the backdrop of a generally observed casual approach to learning a Second language by the learners when compared to Core Subjects. The following methods are adopted based on the nature of the language form, the need and the students enthusiasm.

1. Historical Method– Method adopted while explaining the historical background of the poet.

2. Story Telling method– Method adopted while dealing with topics from ancient ethics.

3. Interactive Method–The student is allowed to express her doubts which are clarified by the teacher and convey their views related to the topic of discussion.

4. Seminars and Group Discussions– The students are given the opportunity to speak on a given topic. They also discuss their topic with their group members and present a summary of their discussion.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES TO FOSTER GOOD LEARNING CLIMATE
 
Students actively take part in academic and co-curricular activities conducted by the department.
 
Some of the events  for instilling love for the subject and improving their standards of verbal and written Telugu language skiils are:
